Cpl. Kolchak XII led the formation, as Soldiers, family members, and pets of the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment took part in the Hawaiian Humane Society's 13th Annual Petwalk. The event, which took place June 22 at Magic Island and Ala Moana Beach Park, raised close to $75,000 for the humane society to provide care for Oahu's homeless, lost, and abused animals. Kolchak, named after a Russian general who gave the 27th Inf. Rgt. the nickname "Wolfhounds," is a two-year-old Borzoi or Russian Wolfhound and serves as the regiment's official mascot. Kolchak was joined by his handler, Spc. Erik Estrada, and 30 other Soldiers, family members, and pets of the 1st Bn., 27th Inf. Rgt. The battalion chaplain, (Captain) Abdullah Hulwe, even brought along his pet rabbit. The two-mile walk around Magic Island and Ala Moana Park was a breeze for Kolchak who completed the Wolfhound 27-mile footmarch just last month. Unfortunately, Hulwe's rabbit did not fare as well and had to be returned to the car early in the race. Hulwe has since enrolled his rabbit in Kolchak's remedial physical training program. |
