Back to 1st Battalion In the News Tropic Lightning -- 22 March 2001 Wolfhounds plan to celebrate 100th anniversaryBy PAO Members of the 27th Infantry Regiment will soon be celebrating 100 years of history. Current and former members of the unit are invited to attend the upcoming Wolfhounds Centennial Celebration April 25 - 27. The event will commemorate the Wolfhound's history, honor Soldiers, teach participants more about the Wolfhound Rgt. and increase unit cohesion. It is open to the public. The event celebration will include a regimental induction ceremony and luau for all its participants. The 27th Inf. Rgt. was organized Feb. 2, 1901 and served in World War I, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam and "Operation Just Cause" in Panama. Both first and second battalions of the 27th Infantry have entered the 50th year of the regiment's relationship with the children and staff of the Holy Family Home Orphanage, Osaka, Japan. During Christmas 1949, Wolfhounds visited the orphanage to deliver gifts and hold a Christmas party for the children. Recognizing the needs of the children, and the then-limited capacity for self-help in postwar Japan, the regiment turned what was to have been a one-time occurrence into flow of supplies, food, building materials, medical assistance, and most importantly, love from American Soldiers and their families to the orphans. Soldiers from 1st and 2nd battalions return to Japan every Christmas, and two children from the orphanage have visited Schofield Barracks annually since 1957. For more information about the event, call 2nd Lt. Trevor E. Voecks at 655-2631.
