BIOGRAPHY

Darrell Wetherbee was born on March 9th, 1960 in Salem, Oregon. Early on, Darrell dedicated his life to the service of his country and fellow man. In 1978 he enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served for eight years. In 1991 he became an officer at the Police Department in Freeport, Maine. After eight years of service to the Department, Darrell volunteered for international police duty and served two tours in Kosovo from 1999 to 2000, and then again from 2001 to 2003. In June 2006, Darrell joined the Civilian Police Assistance Training Team and volunteered to train the new police forces in Iraq. Darrell Wetherbee is survived by his wife Sheila, his two sons, and his daughter.

Darrell loved to fish for bass. At home in Maine you could often find him with his son on Pleasant Pond, practicing their fishing skills.

Darrell loved to tinker with things. He often found objects on the ground, like brass and other things, and he would make something new out of them. Just recently he made a wind chime out of brass he collected from around the FOB.

Before coming here to train the IP in this area, he served 2 tours in Kosovo, as a Police Advisor.

Darrell was always in good spirits. "There was never a time that you didn’t see Darrell without his smile, or saying something positive."

-Jim Barnett.

"There was nothing that Darrell wouldn’t do for you. He was always putting others before himself, always. If you needed something he gave it to you. He was trustworthy, dependable, and so much more to all of us." Jim

He had a calling to train people to become Police Officers. He loved his work and how much it meant to the people of the area. He was focused on tough training so the IP could deal with the ever-changing enemy.

Darrell loved his MREs. He ate them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It took weeks before his team got him to go with them to the DFAC.

Darrell was a surprisingly big fan of Rap and R&B. His partners often gave him funny looks when they found him listening to Eminem, and somehow he knew all the words.

Darrell had a little horse ranch back at home where he raised horses.

He was a very family oriented. Darrell was always calling his family and emailing them. He was always talking about them.

The mission here was much more than a job to Darrell, it was his passion.

He was very close to his 11 yr old son Dakota. They spent countless hours together riding horses, fishing for bass, and exploring the beach.

Darrell was always dedicated. He always went outside the wire (more than anyone else) to check on the IPs standing guard at the JCC. He brought them water and checked on their relief.

He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his country.

He loved the mission.

A Police Officer’s Prayer

Dear Lord, be with me on my beat

This day and every day

Grant that each weary block I walk

May ease a brother’s way

Let me be kindly to the old

And to the young be strong

But let me triumph over those

Whose acts are cruel and wrong

And when my own last summons comes

And I stand in your court

Lord may my rest with You be long

And my punishment be short.
