In this volume the author has endeavored to present the history of the Twenty-Seventh Infantry and classified data of historical significance from the records of the regiment. Every effort has been made to obtain accuracy of statement, simplicity of style, and impartiality of treatment.

In the preparation of this work his grateful acknowledgments are due to Colonel S. C. Vestal, Chief of the Historical Section, Army War College; the late Major James T. Moore; Captain Paolo H. Sperati; Captain William S. Barrett; and Lieutenant Sylvian G. Kindall for contributions of valuable material.  Mr. R.   L. Dancy, of the Schofield Studio, Mr. Floyd Summerville, of Butler, Pa., and Mr. William H. Hunt are thanked for   photographs of unusual interest. Diagram maps and sketches are the work of Captain Thomas Woodburn, Private First Class Martin Latosky, and the author. Illustrations have been made available from the files of The Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

The assistance rendered by Mr. J. M. Cunningham, of The Star-Bulletin Press, in arranging the style of publication and business details, and the courteous and efficient co6peration of Mr. Harlan B. Carter, of the same organization, in managing the mechanical processes necessary for the production of the book, are very much appreciated. The author also desires to express his thanks for the use of books and papers from the Library of Hawaii, and he is especially indebted to the library attendants who have so courteously rendered assistance.

The cooperation of Colonel William E. Hunt, commanding the Twenty-Seventh Infantry, in making available all records of the regiment, and his confidence expressed in the designation of the author as Regimental Historian, are gratefully appreciated. Typing of drafts of various chapters and rosters has been done in the office of Lieutenant Clarence M. Virtue, and the assistance of Sergeant Joe Joseph is acknowledged.
