After the final game of the 1929 football season the regiment marched back from the field with the champions.  With "Kolchak" in the lead, held by Sergeant Martin, then a section of officers and the band, the procession marched to the sally port entrance to the quadrangle.  Colonel Hunt led the column through the sally port and announced that, in the future, victorious teams would enter the quadrangle through the sally port.  Thus to have entered the quadrangle THROUGH THE SALLY PORT was the privilege of CHAMPIONS only.

Today it's called a breeze-way, but the tradition of  champions passing through into the quad is still carried out.
